Kelli P. Coats

You won’t find me creating popular themed art – and I’m okay with that. My attraction to spooky themes has been life-long and is now evolving into Earth-spirit pieces, since reconnecting to my childhood.

Born and raised in natural Florida, I enjoyed a barefoot, dirt road upbringing. Squishing the dirt between my toes and feeling its soft, silkiness I felt a deep, healing connection with Mother Earth. Making mud pies is probably why I enjoy working with clay! I appreciate the intimate feeling of working with earth matter that is literally thousands of years old.

My initial academic art education includes an AA in Art at Eastern Florida State College (previously BCC) with local artist, Nancy Dillen, as my instructor and mentor. During that time, my illustrative 2D piece, “Free Zone”, was published in “Proteus”, the quarterly college publication.

Since then, I earned my BA in Communications and my MA in Art Education from UCF. I have been teaching high school Ceramics in Brevard Public Schools for over twelve years. In 2016 and 2020, I was awarded the Nancy Bauer Dillen Art Teacher Scholarship and attended an artist instructed course at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN.
