Tim Jarvis

Tim’s journey in ceramics began at the age of 13 in Tallahassee, where he discovered a mentor at a studio called “Wheels of Fire” and fell in love with the craft. For 20 years, Tim ran his own auto repair shop and eventually found his life coming around “full circle” as he likes to put it, back into pottery. He recounts that his experience as a mechanic reflects lots of similarities with ceramics. The two processes are alike in the sense that they both require an overall mechanical use of the hands and the patience to follow through with a project from start to finish. The crafter must become familiar with the most skillful way to create a finished piece that works well by following the appropriate steps until completion.

Over the years, Tim found his ceramics specialty in the art of Raku wares. This is a low-fire technique that is very exciting to take part of! Pots are fired outdoors, in open flames, using natural materials such as sawdust, feathers, and even horse hair to create unique, one of a kind natural finishes.

Tim began teaching locally at FIT’s Foosaner Education Center (formerly located in the Eau Gallie Arts District) from 2013 up until its closure in 2020. Tim has become known for teaching with patience, encouragement and understanding the individual needs of each student.
